Science Based Targets initiative validates LIPTON Teas and Infusions’ ambition to cut greenhouse gas emissions
Amsterdam, 6 February 2025 – LIPTON Teas and Infusions, the world’s largest tea group, today confirms its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets have been independently validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) as being in line with limiting global warming to within 1.5°C.
Based the latest climate science, LIPTON Teas and Infusions is targeting net zero GHG emissions across its value chain by 2040.
The full set of validated targets, compared to a 2021 baseline year, are as follows:
Energy and Industry:
- Reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 49.1% by 2030 and 90% by 2040
- Reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions 42% by 2030 and 90% by 2040
Forest, Land and Agriculture (FLAG):
- Reduce absolute scope 3 FLAG GHG emissions 30.3% by 2030 and 72% by 2040
- No deforestation across LIPTON Teas and Infusions’ primary deforestation-linked commodities, with a target date of 31 December 2025
Gareth Mead, Chief Communications & Sustainability Officer at LIPTON Teas and Infusions, said: “Tea has the lowest carbon footprint of any drink after tap water but, as a nature-dependent business, we must show that real progress is possible and inspire others to take action. Our plans are ambitious but robust and backed by the latest science. This validation from the SBTi is encouragement that we are on the right track, and we are eager to help others – in our value chain and beyond – to make their own science-based commitments. We are all dependent on this planet.”
